Replacement Handles For Windows
Window handles are among the most used parts of your double-glazed windows. They can wear down over time and get rusty or worn out.
To replace a UPVC window handle you need to know the spindle length of the handle you have currently and also its fixings. The best way to determine this is to examine the base of your old handle.
Handle
Over time, uPVC window locks and handles are susceptible to damage due to wear and tear or by accidental or deliberate damage. It is possible that the lock or handle becomes difficult to close or open, or that they are not even locked. If this happens, it could be tempting to replace the entire window unit, however this isn't always necessary. Most of the time, it's the case that a replacement handle or lock is sufficient.
The espagnolette design is the most common uPVC window handle. The handle is equipped with an external spindle that is protruding out of the handle. It is inserted into a gearbox that operates the multipoint locking system inside the window. It is crucial to match the right handle and lock to your windows in order to ensure that they work properly, which is why we stock a wide variety of replacement handles for all kinds of uPVC windows.
When replacing a uPVC window handle, it's recommended to use screws with cover caps to ensure the screws are secure and prevent them from rust. You can also use a washer, spacer or other sealant to ensure an even tighter fit. Having a screw cap in place will also stop water and debris from getting into the handle and damaging the handle.
Once the handle has been removed from the window, it's an ideal idea to scrub the spindle of the new handle, as well as the threaded section of the bolt. This will make sure that the new handle is able to fit and function correctly, and will also help to stop dirt from getting into the multipoint lock.

Next it's time to install the new uPVC handle. It's important that you follow the directions provided with your new handle, and take a look at the previous one prior to beginning to have an idea of how to do it correctly. The process is usually easy. If you encounter any issues that aren't addressed in this guide, we suggest contacting our team to get more information.
It is also important to note that if you're replacing the uPVC handle with a cockspur (also known as an Espag handle) you'll need to examine the step height of the window in order to determine the appropriate size of handle. The steps height is the distance between the bottom of the window and the location where the handles of the cockspur are.
Hinges
The hinges may not be in line with the frame of your window when windows begin to open and close with a visible space. This is usually a simple fix that can be resolved with a new set of replacement window hinges. Repair My Windows And Doors offer a range of different options, and can even modify the size of the hinges to fit your requirements.
Whether you have a standard wooden or upvc window, we have an extensive selection of kinds of window hinges. These are available in a choice of colors that match your existing window frames and come with all fixings required to install. If you have a double-glazed window that has an older style of hinge, we can also offer a selection of repair screws that permit you to cut the old thread form back into the frame.
We offer a range of different hinge types that range from standard casement window hinges that can be used with a standard or tilt and turn handle, through to fire escape egress hinges that are suitable for use on larger sized side-hung windows. These are designed to open fully in an emergency and have an easy-clean position that makes it easy to clean. We also have hinges with restricted egress that are designed to limit the opening angle of the window to 100mm or less which is ideal for homes with children.
The sound of a hinge squeaking can be a sign that the hinges are wearing out, and this is usually due to the friction of metal against metal. A small amount of lubricant can help, however if the noise persists it is likely that the hinges will need to be replaced.
This is due to plumb windows being able to avoid optional binding. The operating sash is aligned with the frame so that the window will close and open correctly. If a window is not plumb may begin to close and open with difficulty or may become warped over time which can affect the seal and appearance of the window.
When you purchase replacement windows made of upvc hinges be aware that they can be bought in either imperial or metric sizes. The metric sizes tend to be more precise, but this isn't noticeable when they are installed. The first corner holes on the track are standard, but the others may differ based on the hardware that was originally used. You should take measurements of the spacing of holes on your frame to make sure that the upvc hinges you buy are the right dimensions.
Crank
Over time, normal wear and tear can cause damage to your window handle, lock or crank mechanism. This can make it difficult to open and close your windows. It could also affect their security. If your window is difficult to open or close, or if you hear a clicking sound when you turn the handle it could be a sign that you need to replace the mechanism. If you're unable to secure your window, or the multipoint locks are damaged, it might be worth replacing this part too.
It's easy to replace a window crank with minimal effort. But, it's essential that you purchase the correct size replacement. Ensure that the replacement has the same step height as the old one and can be measured by measuring the distance between the guide for the crank arm bushing and the notch on the track that runs across the bottom of the window frame. Alternately, you can determine the length of the spindle that is on your existing handle to determine what size you need to replace it with.
The kind of window handle that you have will determine the type of crank mechanism you need for your casement or awning windows. Espag handles are equipped with a mental spindle at the back which is attached to the frame of the window and is the motor that drives the mechanism. Cockspur handles are fitted with pegs that are fixed in the frame by three or four screws that are inserted in the sash as well as the frame.
Once you've identified the right replacement, it's simple to install. Remove any trim mounting screws from the casement cover, and gently lift the cover off to expose the insides of the window operator (Photo 1). Compare the new lever with the old one, and then remove any rusted trim screw. Then, attach the replacement to the window frame, replace any screws that were damaged or bent, then put the casement cover on top of the mechanism.
